Desolate region in northern Eurasia. Don't trust the penguins. Recommended for all survivors.
Polaris is a curated playable map in Unturned. It takes place in a northern enviornment, based on a blend of primarily Scandinavia and Siberia. The map was created by Daniel "Danaby2" Segboer, with Maciej "Renaxon" Maziarz and LVOmega are credited as Collaborators. It was released on December 16, 2022. The map's creators can be supported by purchasing the A6 Polaris Mystery Box or the A6 Polaris Map Bundle. Special thanks were given to—staswalle, Lukas "lusod" Söderhjelm, zeb, Witness Protection, Der Ente and EnderButDragon.
Polaris was designed with a pickup and play philosophy, designed to be a more modern take on the Washington style of PvP gameplay. The player was supposed to be able to log in, and very quickly be at a level where they could stand a chance in PvP fights with end-game players. The progression of the map is designed to be much shorter than Elver to keep the difference between endgame and new players minimal and encourage a less sweaty gameplay style. This direction proved divisive, being much more popular amongst new and casual players, whereas hardcore fans commonly characterized the map as dumbed down version of Elver.
Large research facility located on the mountain slopes. A large observatory is situated in the center of the facility. A mega zombie can be found here.
Large, mostly empty field located just south of center, barely above sea level. A windmill can be found here which acts as a fast travel point to and from the NPC base.
The A6 is a massive highway that extends from the northern shore at "East End", through Tågbro, before turning south near Intelligence. The A6 continues until the southern world border towards "Skipper". Several Radar Vans and mines can be found along its path.
Several crashed drones can be found around the map. Located at Intelligence, in between Tågbro and Fort Evergreen, just north of St. Dimitar, east of Vindrise and east of Norva on the peninsula. A Military Drive can be obtained at these sites.
Ravine in the shape of the kanji for Mizu/Shuǐ, the respective Japanese and Chinese word for water. A Beret can be found here. To the south-west, a HAZE outpost can be found, along with a fast travel point.
There are 4 main observer spawns on the map. One nearby St. Dimitar, one just outside Norva, one just north of Intelligence, just east of the A6, and one located north of Fort Evergreen.
Located off the south-western shore, the NPC base can be found. The player can fast-travel to multiple points around the map from here. Several Penguins can spawn here. In a grotto south of the base, an Observer can spawn, but is impossible to kill.
An unknown settlement west of A6 Polaris, presumably located on the A6 beyond, ironically to the west, which is blocked by a tunnel collapse. The player can progress pass the presumed world border to a large parking lot, which can spawn several civilian vehicles and is home to some penguins.
Massive red rail bridge located in the northern sea. Cross the entire length of the map. It is based on Forth Bridge in Scotland. On one of the supporting islands, Reginald can spawn.
The red sewer entrance. First entrance is located south of overpass of the the military blockade on the A6 by Tågbro. The secondary entrance is directly south of the first.
Small seating area by the cliffs, just north of the Rail Bridge. The player can obtain a one-time Mercenary Armor set here. Benedict can rarely spawn here.
Ruin Guard
???
"Rusted farming equipment" located in North Crop's western field. A reference to Genshin Impact.
Shapes
???
Small structure located on the western flank of Mt. N. Several cutout shapes can be found here. This location is based on Howden Park Shapes.
An unknown settlement south of A6 Polaris, presumably located on the A6 beyond the southern world border, which is blocked by barricades. It is only ever referred to by road signs. The name is a reference to the penguin of the same name from the Madagascar animated series.
Polaris had three major revisions during development.[1]
Polaris is notable for having several major leaks prior to release, with many Chinese servers hosting the map prior to release.
This was due to a bug where the game would not verify if a password was inputted properly prior to downloading map content.
Polaris would upload test builds as unlisted steam workshop links, which would get auto-downloaded by the server when players that were whitelisted connected. But due to this oversight, many players were able to gain access without permission.
Polaris is unusual for having a very public development cycle.
Danaby would often stream editing the map, and took suggestions from chatters.
Polaris is unusual for the playable space expanding far outside the bounds of the GPS, nearly double the size of advertised playable space.
Polaris contains many small caches around the map, placing a heavy focus on exploration.
Polaris is the first map in Danaby's pentalogy to break the alphabetic naming convention.
The map was going to follow the trend, as evidenced by the development name. Ultimately, a better name than "Frost" that started with the letter 'F' could not be picked, and the decision to break the trend was made.
