Rio de Janeiro Remastered is a curated playable map in Unturned. It was created by Flodo, JienSultan, L2, Zefirka, Leprechaun12, and Nolamo. It was released on March 19, 2025, and featured in the 3.25.3.0 patch. The map's creators can be supported by purchasing the Rio Mystery Box, Rio Map Bundle and Skull Sergeant Bundle, as well as the Rio Vaccinator Bundle, Rio National Guard Bundle, and Rio Tamer Bundle.
It is a reimagined urban-survival map centered around the southeastern Brazilian coast, with Guanabara Bay, beaches, iconic landmarks like Sugarloaf Mountain and Christ the Redeemer, and dense city regions. Being a remaster of Rio de Janeiro Classic, it aims to maintain the original map's gameplay and "classic" feel while introducing quality-of-life changes, stylized environment touches, and new gameplay elements to make exploration more challenging and unique.
Remaster Changes
The map had many changes made to it, including:
- All locations have been redesigned from the ground up, with new buildings and layouts;
- A complete redo of the vanilla item pool, with roughly 1500+ items;
- Remodels of old Rio models, particularly the guns and buildings;
- Rehauled visual identity for the entire map;
- 12 brand new animals;
- The Screamer zombie, a new special zombie type exclusive to the map;
- Rewritten lore;
- 17 new vehicle types, from the original map's 2 unique vehicle types;
- Tweaked progression, including blueprint books, a new structure tier, etc;
- New music tracks composed by staswalle and Nolamo;
As for gameplay changes from the original map, the following are only present in the remaster:
- Recipe Books/Crafting Memorization: Players can find recipe books during gameplay; once learned, recipes may become memorized.
- Safezone & NPCs: The “Brocoió Island” serves as a safezone where you can complete quests and trade items. Occasionaly, some NPCs appear over time near the docks to trade or give quests.
- Item Changes: Some items from both the original map and vanilla have gotten changes. For example, eating a can of beans will leave the can in your inventory, health-related items heal over time, etc.
Geography

Trivia
General
- Rio de Janeiro Remaster is the second map remaster to be featured and given new achievements, the first being Ireland.
- The Screamer Zombie is an Animal in code, which allows it to wander freely in any given area.
- There are a handful of easter eggs and references to the original map's contents and lore, despite the rewritten lore.
- The "Nelson Bricks" item is a reference to a project Nelson has showcased in The Unturned Podcast, which was a small tech demo with building blocks.
- The NDM Pernambuco is a returning location from the original map, however it returns as a deadzone and military location instead of an NPC safezone.
- In the original map, the ship was named "NAM Bahia". Both Pernambuco and Bahia are Brazilian states in the northeastern region.
- Both are also based on the real life destroyer ship, NDM Bahia.
- Having taken place during the map's development, a memorial for Voepass Flight 2283 was included in Galeão Airport.
Cultural
- Several weapons and creatures are based on elements of Brazilian mythology and culture:
- The Capelobo and Headless Mule enemies are inspired by mythological creatures of the same names.
- The “Mapinguari” recoilless rifle takes its name from a legendary Amazonian beast.
- The “Tucunaré” military boat is named after the Amazonian peacock bass fish.
- The “Guarani” sniper rifles are named after the Guarani, an Indigenous people of South America.
- The “Serrano” submachine gun is named after a Brazilian Pitbull breed, referencing the Bulldog item from vanilla Unturned.
- The “Constrictor” and “Maurus” submachine guns are named after Boa constrictor and Epicrates maurus snake species, respectively.
- The “Calango” marksman rifle is named after a common lizard found throughout Brazil.
- One of the in-game posters references Abaporu, a famous painting by Tarsila do Amaral.
- The Bendegó Meteorite displayed in the Niterói Museum is based on a real artifact, the largest meteorite ever found in Brazil.
